$1 Victim
07.28.04 (12:33 am)   [edit]
Last Friday night was fun. Nothing beats a bottle of beer and poker on Friday night, no classes to be worried the next day and you can sleep till you're dead the following day. Oh yeah, now I appreciate TGIF- thank god it is Friday.

The last time I played poker was err...4 months ago? Yup my average lost per game is $10 and I am now at a -$30 streaks. Not good. But I still have 2 years to get my money back...if I could. Nonetheless, Friday's game is a totally different environment. Unlike my previous games, it is tournament style, winner takes all. So once you lose, you better pray that someone will lose big or you'll be spectators for the entire night. Sounds fun huh? Wait till I tell you the amount of the pot, you'd be really dissapointed...only $5. Yup, we spent nearly 8 hours to decide who takes all the $5, lowest pay job one could find in US.

The fun was that I was not in a sober mood. I think I play better with a bottle of Guiness at my side. Man, with a face as red as an apple, you cant tell if I am lying. A bad poker face, but it works. I was among the last 3. Oh there are 5 players by the way. Being the last three is no fun, especially when you are not the chip leader. Letting other players buying you out of the game is definitely not a good experience. I so wanted to see what the 2 cards facing down of his are but man...I dont the chips to help me with! Well I could but my instinct tell me dont. Guess you have no one to thrust but your gut feeling during poker games.

Not only losing chips is a pain, surviving in the game is even harder. When you are not the chip leader, you want to play as conservative as possible, and not to be swayed by those losers to go all in and join their hobo association. However, giving up is easier. You just quit and dont have to worry about it anymore! I managed to stayed for 2 hours in a third place position, climbing slowly, squeezing my two opponents little by little. Oh yeah, with Guiness, my best partner and advisor, I scared them with Jack Shits a couple of time, bait them to invest in a losing game, and once in a while force them to be charitable to the poorer citizen of the pot. Whenever I said "That's it!", I raised a 10 after the flop, 20 at the turn and 40 at the river...hehehe...They were literally scared and just folded, to minimize their loss. Of course there were a few times I got away with it, ya with Jack Shits!!!

Surviving is really the hardest. It's easy to win my money...but to remain cool and play consistently is not I am good at. Once I had my money, I lost my tempo, trying to earn my with more investment. That gives me away pretty easily. Besides, after exhausting my Guiness, I am sober. Sober man doesnt dare to risk too much hence contributing to a slower and modest return. Earning per round drop rather drastically. Desperation took over and that gave me a readable face. My wholeself getting irritated with steady losses and I couldnt think rationally...In the final blow, I put all in on a stupid hand...Sigh...I should have known it better myself.

Lesson learnt in poker game:

1. Dont give up, even if left with chips enough for blinds
2. Get Guiness or Kamikaze or anything else, risk is what creates the empire
3. Be very...very...very...patient, even if me is winning
4. Be the chip leader if possible
5. Dont act like a pro even if I am a pro
6. I can raise, call, fold on a pocket aces, or bluff as if I have one
7. I could have a Full House with a 3 and a Jack
8. Never have a woman at your side as the advisor, it's your money

Life is like a poker game, eh?
